Boston archdiocese calls on critics (members of The Friends of St. Frances) as key witnesses in tax dispute with Scituate

7/14/2011

Archdiocese of Boston, Cardinal Sean O’Malley announced signed a decree deconsecrating six churches in the Boston area. This is a normal process prior to putting up churches for sale.
The Friends of St. Frances X. Cabrini, Inc. anticipated this procedural stunt by the Archdiocese of Boston and have already countered against this excepted move with a canonical appeal filed in Rome several months ago. The appeal was filed through Roman canonical experts at the Congregation for the Clergy and that appeal is now in process.

Over the past seven years all vigiling churches were granted at least one or two Masses during their vigils.

Archdiocese announces ‘Disciples in Mission’ pastoral plan.  The Pastoral Plan groups the parishes of the Archdiocese into approximately 135 collaboratives. Cardinal Sean O'Malley has been quoted that he envisions the success of the new pastoral plan relying heavily on the laity and parishes: "They must refocus on outreach and evangelization.  We can't use all of our resources and time, just to serve the active Catholics in the community." Ironically, the St. Frances Catholic Faith Community would be the prefect lay led model for what the Archdiocese is trying to achieve with their new pastoral plan. Or could this be the beginning of Reconfiguration II with more church closings?

Notified today by canonical liaisons and attorneys that the previous appeal filed by The by  St. Frances X. Cabrini parishioners was denied, the group continues their unwavering commitment to the parish of St. Frances and will file a final appeal to Vatican Supreme Apostolic Court.    “We are extremely disappointed by this most recent ruling”, states Jon Rogers, spokesperson for The Friends of St. Frances, “especially witnessing a seventy-five percent success rate in other dioceses with similar appeals, but we remain committed to exhaust every appeal possible. We will honor a promise made at the inception of the vigil to use all recourse available.” The Friends of St. Frances will use the Church’s own canonical laws to continue their rights of appeal by filing another Vatican appeal within a tight ten day deadline.
Appeal fact check:

- In the dioceses of Springfield, MA, Syracuse, NY, and Allentown, PA 75% of parishioner group’s appeals, with the same type of appeal, has won.

- In the diocese of Cleveland, OH all 12 of the parishioner group appeals won with the same appeal. 100% parishioner victory.

- Dilapidated building (church) was one reason given for our denial. However it takes a grave reason to deconsecrate a church and under canon law even if your church burnt to the ground and there was no church standing that is not a grave reason.

- Another grave reason provided was too few priest; however, in the Syracuse, NY and Allentown, PA wins the Vatican court cited too few priests does not constitute a grave reason.
